Tuesday 30th January – 7:30pm start WI Hall Newton Ferrers

Paul Naylor – The Colourful Lives of our Local Marine Life

Paul Naylor is a Devon-based marine biologist and underwater photographer with a passion for showing people what beautiful and fascinating animals live around the British coast, through articles, talks, films, social media and TV, as well as his book – Great British Marine Animals.

The creatures’ intriguing behaviour and colourful life stories are the particular focus of his still photography and video, both for scientific research and engaging audiences. His footage has appeared on the BBC’s One Show, Blue Planet UK, Countryfile and Autumnwatch.

Paul works with conservation organisations and the media to raise the profile of our wonderful marine life and the importance of caring for our seas.

Christine Skelmersdale from Broadleigh Bulbs

A talk on the use of bulbs in the garden, with the emphasis on colour, shape, texture etc.

She will share the principles behind successfully using bulbs – in sunny & shady borders, containers and for naturalising. A practical guide.

Stella Exley from Hare Spring Cottage Plants

Camassia, Chris, Chelsea and Chaos

A light-hearted look behind the scenes of growing for a well-known multi award winning garden designer by Stella Exley, who is an independent hardy plant nurserywoman based in the beautiful South Hams area of South Devon. She regularly exhibits in Floral Marquees at all the major shows and is the proud holder of three National Plant Collections – Camassia, Sidalcea and Uvularia.

Mark Wash – Tamar Valley Crocosmia and other South African Beauties

A talk on how they grow in the wild, explore the history of breeding over nearly 150 year and many wonderful varieties created as a result including Trecanna Nursery’s own Cornish Tamar Valley hybrids. Learn how to grow them successfully in the garden. It also includes coverage of the recent AGM trials that took place at RHS Wisley and those fabulous varieties that won awards!

Saul Walker – My time as the Chelsea Show Manager

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the most prestigious horticultural event in the world and brings five days of horticultural splendour to central London every May. The show build-up is incredibly intense and complicated, so join Saul, former Show Manager, as he gives a behind the scenes look at what it takes to put on the world’s most famous flower show.

AGM & Talk by Jim Stephens – Camelias

Camellias are beautiful evergreen shrubs that are very well suited to the west-country climate. A great many varieties are available and almost all are capable of growing very large. Jim will speak about how best to use them in small to medium sized gardens, which ones to grow and how to get the best from them. He has been working with the National Collection of Camellias at Mount Edgcumbe for several years and until he retired he worked on a nursery which carried a huge range of Camellias, He now judges Camellia classes at RHS shows and, most importantly, he has a couple of dozen Camellias growing in his own garden, along with a great many other plants.

Chris Trimmer – Plant Conservation Centre Manager

Chris has 37 years’ experience growing plants with extensive knowledge of conservation growing techniques from seed sowing to grafting and everything in between. He has developed training programs for the National Trust around propagation. Plant Hunting experience in India and extensive cultivated plant knowledge.

His talk will be about how the Plant Conservation works to conserve the National Trust’s ‘Living Collection’.
