Jane returns to update us on new Eden Project in the UK and around the world.

Caradoc Doy – Veitch – Plant Hunters and Pioneers

This talk is a brief history of a remarkable nursery which sent twenty-three plant collectors to many countries, mainly during the Victorian period. William and Thomas Lobb, Richard Pearce, John Gould Veitch and Peter Veitch, Frederick Burbidge, Charles Maries, Ernest Wilson and others all worked for the Veitch nurseries of Exeter and Chelsea. Caradoc highlights some of the well-known and interesting varieties introduced by these pioneering plant hunters who discovered many hundreds of new species. So successful were they that there is scarcely a garden in the British Isles that does not contain a plant derived from their introductions.

Claire Forster – Propagation or plants for free!

Claire Forster will be teaching us how to increase our plants in our gardens by sowing seed, taking all types of cuttings and when to do it in order to have good success rates.

David Usher – Restoration of Hestercombe

Former Head Gardener for 18 years, David Usher has a unique insight into the acclaimed gardens at Hestercombe, near Taunton, Somerset. He helped restore them.

His talk will cover the 3 gardens of Hestercombe – Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian, as well as the history of the house and its owners. the Bampfyldes in the 18th century, Portmans in the 19th, and finally the local authority in 1951 when the estate was taken over by the Somerset Fire Brigade.

AGM & Talk on Ferns by Peter Savage (Bowdens Hostas)

Peter has worked at Bowdens Hostas for many years and came to talk to us about Hostas a number of years ago. He returns to tell us the range of ferns available for gardeners, where to use them and why you should love them.

Howard Wills – Gardening for Wildlife

Howard runs Fernwood Nursery, specializing in Sempervivums and related plants, at Peters Marland near Torrington. He is a life-long gardening enthusiast (plantaholic!) with many years of experience of growing a wide range of plants. He holds Plant Heritage (NCCPG) National Collections® of the genera Sempervivum, and Jovibarba (Alpine Houseleeks). He has exhibited at all the major Royal Horticultural Society Flower Shows and his exhibits have been awarded RHS Gold Medals at Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, Gardener’s World Live, Tatton Park Flower Show, Malvern Flower Show and RHS Wisley Flower Show. His talk he describes his methods and results in developing his garden at Fernwood with native wildlife and wildflowers in mind. He will give several suggestions for those wishing to enjoy their garden in an environmentally sensitive way
